Suggestions for Solutions

Hi delegates!

As BMUN grows nearer, I wanted to offer some advice on your solutions and what our dais expects for committee!

Before diving into the different types of solutions we are hoping to see in committee, I wanted to take this opportunity to revisit our learning goals and expectations for research in hopes that your solutions end up addressing these key points:

  1. Understanding the political and economic landscape of Asia prior to the Tom Yung Kung Crisis

  2. Understanding the economic events and terms such as exchange rates, the stock market, interest rates, debts and inflation and how they all contributed to the Tom Yung Kung Crisis

  3. Addressing the potential economic knock-on effects that the Tom Yung Kung Crisis to the region

  4. Addressing the potential social and political impacts of economic uncertainty to the region

  5. Recognizing the effects of the Asian Financial Crisis on insinuating social and political unrest in Indonesia and addressing the need for political reform in Indonesia

  6. Understanding the role of Chinese-Indonesians as a targeted ethnic group and taking steps to address the victims of violence and acts of systemic discrimination

Please keep these learning goals in mind when forming solutions! They are key points we want you to address!

Need stepping off points to start thinking about solutions? Start at the synopsis! As you read, highlight key issues that need to be addressed as well as ways they have been addressed in the past. From here you can think critically about what has been successful and what you can reform. Additionally, the ‘Questions to Consider’ section is a GREAT way to jumpstart your solutions outline… happy writing! Our synopsis is linked here if you want to check that out now.

We know these topics can seem overwhelming at times and that it may be difficult to think of where to begin. With this in mind, we wanted to offer a few suggestions on where to start with solutions and what we think would be great points to include:

  1. Capital Controls

  2. IMF Bailouts

  3. Financial Systems & Industries Reform

  4. Establishment of Social Safety Stipends and Systems

  5. Security & Legal Protection for Minorities
  6. International Mediation & Dialogue

We hope this has offered a bit more clarity on the solution process, and as always, feel free to comment or reach out to hasean72@bmun.org anytime!

Best,

Darren
