How to Draft a Resolution (SMART)

Hi delegates! BMUN is just around the corner, so I wanted to revisit the pinnacle document of committee: your resolutions! Before we even get into the details of your resolutions, the format and jargon about resolutions can be quite confusing (boooo), but not to worry! BMUN has a Resolution Structure document, linked here , that covers all the teeny tiny details of these papers.  When turning your solutions into operative format, we want you to keep the SMART goals in mind: S - Specific , what exactly is this operative trying to achieve? M - Measurable , how will you know when this operative is successful? Are there any specific points that will make this solution more quantifiable? A - Attainable , is this solution genuinely possible? Is that clear in your operative? R - Relevant , will this operative positively contribute to solving this problem? T - Timely , when do you expect to achieve this solution by? Are these time-constraints reasonable? When in doubt, refer back to...

Suggestions for Solutions

Hi delegates! As BMUN grows nearer, I wanted to offer some advice on your solutions and what our dais expects for committee!  Before diving into the different types of solutions we are hoping to see in committee, I wanted to take this opportunity to revisit our learning goals and expectations for research in hopes that your solutions end up addressing these key points: Understanding the political and economic landscape of Asia prior to the Tom Yung Kung Crisis Understanding the economic events and terms such as exchange rates, the stock market, interest rates, debts and inflation and how they all contributed to the Tom Yung Kung Crisis Addressing the potential economic knock-on effects that the Tom Yung Kung Crisis to the region Addressing the potential social and political impacts of economic uncertainty to the region Recognizing the effects of the Asian Financial Crisis on insinuating social and political unrest in Indonesia and a ddressing the need for political reform in Indon...

Procedure and Committee Flow

Hi Delegates! I wanted to check in with you to provide some more insight to how our committee is going to work at BMUN 72. HASEAN will be using Standard BMUN Procedure.  Our committee will start with Topic A and you should refer to the events preceding July 2, 1997, as the past tense. We'll begin by opening a running Speaker’s List (standard speaking time is 1 minute, 30 seconds) and those speeches will be followed by 2 30-second comments by other delegates. This is the default timing for the Speaker’s List and can be amended if agreed upon by the committee. The Speaker’s List can also be interrupted by Moderated Caucuses and Informal Caucuses that give delegates the opportunity to exchange opinions on policy, solutions, and more specific aspects of the topics at hand. In our committee, our dais plans on leaving the flow of committee up to you delegates, so we suggest you come prepared with specific subtopics and policies you hope to discuss! During Informal Caucus time, d...

Vice Chair Introduction: Su-Ann Ho

Image
Hey Delegates, My name is Su-Ann Ho (she/her), and I am thrilled to be a Vice Chair for HASEAN at BMUN LXXII! This will be my ninth year participating in Model United Nations, and fourth year in BMUN. I am also serving as the USG of Research this year, and am incredibly proud of the committees programme we have prepared this year. The majority of my MUN experience has been at conferences in Vancouver, Canada where I am from. I am currently a senior at UC Berkeley studying Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and Bioengineering. I enjoy teaching and dedicate a portion of my time to teaching on the Machine Structures course staff at Cal. As well, since transitioning from competing to staffing in MUN six years ago, I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing the immersive debates and ideas hatched from committee rooms from a broader perspective. The research, writing, and editing process of papers in MUN is also a wonderful break from the STEM-heavy work of engineering, and allows m...

Welcome to BMUN 72!

Image
Hi everyone! Welcome to HASEAN 72! My name is Darren Lee, and I'm excited to be your head-chair for this upcoming conference this March. As of right now, I am a senior at Berkeley studying Business Administration. I was born in Sydney, Australia, and grew up there for eight years before immigrating to Jakarta, Indonesia, which I now call home. I'm a big fan of Formula 1, a competitive swimmer, and a major advocate of good Phở. Joining MUN in high school was one of the best decisions of my life, I got the chance to not only travel Indonesia but also travel across Asia too. Besides getting to travel, it gave me a place to meet new friends and most importantly develop new, valuable academic skills. Skills like being able to speak in front of hundreds of people, write up speeches in seconds, and research policies up to a big, thick binder level. All skills that I am confident all of you will develop during our time together! I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in March! Go...
